Notes
As a follow up to the acclaimed movie-themed compilation Crime Scene USA, Giant Steps Recordings again looks to Hollywood for 'Lights! Camera! Doo Wop!'
Real or just imagined, Doo Wop has become synonymous with the early 1950s and, in turn, the emergence of teenage culture and what is believed to be coming-of-age innocence. Very much an American phenomenon, Doo Wop has embedded itself in that nation's psyche to the extent that its presence is regularly heard on the soundtracks of numerous big box office films.
Whether underscoring mobster movies such as Martin Scorsese's 'Mean Streets' and 'Goodfellas' or emphasising the rites of passage story lines of such timeless teen classics as 'American Graffiti' and 'Diner', the 28 tracks included here are an indication of just how widespread is this genre's appeal.
In the same way as many of today's Gangsta Rappers project a violent image, it was assumed that some of the tough looking Doo Wop groups were hoodlums with gang connections. True or false, the one thing they all had in common was they were smartly dressed in matching stage clothes and indulged in varying degrees of choreography.
